"I am always at play, in play."
Welcome to our 'Why I Play' series, the place where we get to meet interesting people in the creative industries and beyond, who use play in their practice, work and life. Here they share their play techniques and their thoughts on why playing is crucial for all humans regardless of age
The second interview of this series features Bernard De Koven, author of 'The Well-Played Game' and 'A Playful Path', and designer of playful experiences across the globe. Bernard believes that play helps people become more free and empathetic, and to create more inclusive and caring communities.

What do you do?
I write about games and playfulness. I also teach, design, lead workshops, give keynotes - also about games and playfulness. I am the author of The Well-Played Game and a Playful Path, and blogger at deepfun.com and aplayfulpath.com.
When was the last time you played?
I’m playing now. How do you use play in your work?
I am always at play, in play. What do you get from playing?
Love, life, fun, community, sanity, hope, energy, health. Why do you think play is important for people in general - and not only children?
In this TEDx talk 'The Politics of playfulness', Bernard describes and illustrates the power of adult playfulness:
If you were an imaginary animal what would it be?
A flying otter. Otters are wonderfully playful critters. And, as long as I was giving these playful beings the benefit of my imagination, I’d make them able to fly - double the fun, at least - sliding down clouds and things.
